The Whirlwind that is Summer Academy

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, June 25, 2013,
I agree with Haeun, I can't believe SA is going by so fast.  We only have 2 more days!!  I can't believe that a mere 2 1/2 weeks ago I didn't know you kids (well except for Sage and Maren and Amy who attend the school I teach in) and now I feel like I know you so well.  I am going to miss everyone!  I think many of you will miss each other too!  And what about Ryan?  We will all miss Ryan!

Summer Academy hits like a storm and blows threw our lives so quickly.  You can't blink or you will miss ...

Happy Birthday Kaitlyn

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Friday, June 21, 2013,
I totally forgot to wish Kaitlyn a Happy Birthday.  Shucks!!  HAPPY BIRTHDAY Kaitlyn.  We'll talk about it tomorrow.

So how was the field trip?  Oh my, I am exhausted.  It was AMAZING and we got to talk to 2 more Judges and see some sentencing hearings and meet the Ramsey County Attorney and tour St. Thomas Law School.  Did you hear them say that 1700 people apply every single year to go to that law school?  Do you remember how many they let in?  Only 150 each year.  WOW!!  What do you suppose...

Our Second Long Day

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, June 19, 2013,
Please remember to bring a lunch for tomorrow.

Please know that I need to apologize up front but we are going to have to eat on the bus again.  YIKES!!

We are going to have a whirlwind trip.  We are going to see lots of court and a law school and things like that.  It will be fun and less formal than the last courthouse but still needing you to be on your very best behavior.  It is still REAL court and we might see REAL people receiving REAL jail sentences so clowning around is not allowed.  It...

Looking Ahead

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Monday, June 17, 2013,
Friday we spent a good chunk of the day revamping and rebuilding offices as well as writing thank you notes to the many people who helped us with our field trip.

This week we will be busy
    1.  Writing our brief to the court in the Baker v. Sanji case and then preparing and giving our oral arguments;
2.  Designing letterhead and business cards;
3.  Getting our next case which is sadly a divorce case;
4.  Learning about the tions--negotiation, arbitration, mediation--and how they can help l...

What A Day!!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, June 13, 2013,
Perhaps I tried to cram a little too much into our day but, man did we do a lot!!  Were you exhausted when you got home?  First we had a lovely, informative tour of Murnane and Brandt on the 32nd and 33rd floor of the Wells Fargo Building in downtown St. Paul.  The President of the law firm, Mr. Haas stopped in to talk to you.  Do you know how cool that is?

Then we ran off to the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals and 1. toured a trial court room and got to sit in the judge chair, the witness stand,...

Big Day Tomorrow!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, June 12, 2013,
First of all, don't forget a lunch.
Second of all, don't forget money if you want to buy ice cream.

Finally, please spend a little time researching what kind of cases court of appeals courts hear and how a case might get to the appeals court.  You can research the 8th circuit court of appeals specifically as that is where we will be going to hear oral arguments.  You also should familiarize yourself with the law firm of Murnane and Brandt.  They have a nice website that tells you all the kinds ...

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, June 12, 2013,
Way to go guys.  We had a GREAT first day.  You worked very hard and did a nice job working on your bar exam.  Thanks to all you bloggers for working so hard to get that blogging done.  Did you share it with your parents so they can read up on all our happenings?  You should!

Tomorrow we start construction of our walls AND you get your first client.  You have so much to learn like the facts of the case, how to set up a case file, how to keep time sheets so you can bill your clients, and more. ...

Welcome To Kovacs and Associates

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, June 11, 2013,
How was your Bar Exam?  Do you think you passed?  When do you think you will find out?  Actual law students who have graduated from law school study for a couple months before they take the real bar exam.  The real bar exam is 2 1/2 days long!  Can you imagine taking a test for 2 1/2 days?  After the bar exam is taken the test taker has to wait about 4 months to find out if they passed or not.  Oh my, what a long 3 1/2 to 4 months that is.  How long do you think you will have to wait until yo...
