Friday, Friday

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, January 31, 2013,
How did you like the pi rap and the pi song we listened to today?  Vote for which one you liked better by blogging your vote today.

In looking over the MAP scores I realized (remember, realize is with a z) that they were better than I thought.  I don't know if I like the way your goal was set off last year's results.  Hmm...we will talk more about it but in reality nearly all of you have improved over your fall reading score.  That's the good news.  Many of you still have quite a way to go to ...

The Wild Won!!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, January 30, 2013,
I had a great time at the Wild game last night.  They won!!

We have to take our READING MAP test tomorrow.  Then we will be able to compare your current score with your score last year so we have a good idea if you are growing in your reading skills or not.  I do know that you are growing, it's just a question of whether or not it will show up on the test.  It needs to so...be ready to rock and roll and show what you know.

What are some things you can do to make sure you do your best on a test?...

Blurtitice Epidemic Erupts

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, January 29, 2013,
Oh my, class.  We  need to nip the blurtitice bug in the bud.  We need to make it go away.  Please reflect on your own classroom skills and think about what you can do to make this happen in our room.  Did this happen because we had a sub yesterday?  Hmmm....

I am going to the WILD game tonight.  Lucky!!  I am going out to dinner, where I plan on having a steak, and then heading off to the game.  Good times.

Please don't forget to have your DARE homework done.  You have a math graph to make an...

17 Kids is Not A Lot

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Friday, January 25, 2013,
We were down 6 kids today.  2 were on vacation, 2 were sick and 2 more were at appointments.  Weird day when so many kids are gone.

Today in math we explored rotational symmetry and so hopefully you are reading to slide on to circle graphs and all of that.  Flip to it?  Just trying to use the transitional language to descibe our next move.

Have a great weekend.  Stay warm, get outside and play if you're well, good luck to all the teams and see ya Monday.

What Was in Your PIP?

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, January 23, 2013,
We wrote PIPs today--that is to say we came up with Personal Improvement Plans.  We assessed where we are, thought about where we want to be, and then devised a plan for getting there.  Be sure and blog about some of the elements of your PIP so classmates who were short on ideas can learn from yours.  That's why we blog--to collaborate and share ideas.  Good times.

Tonight you are to figure out the average number of words you read a minute.  Check the homework tab for more details.  Have a gre...

Today We Are Learning About Teaching Online

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Monday, January 21, 2013,
Most of the teachers are learning how to do it on their schoology account but I am planning on doing it through this website.  Did you know that many or most of the classes I took to get my teaching license were online or at least part online?  My Master's Degree classes were definitley online.  Still, there are some of you who can't get online at home which makes learning online tricky for elementary kids.  Maybe we'll have to make it a choice activity.  Hmm...if you have any great ideas let...

Have a Great 4 Day Weekend...

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, January 17, 2013,
And don't forget to feel bad for your poor old teacher who will be here working on report cards tomorrow and taking classes all day Monday.  School is such a bummer when your smiling faces aren't here.  Besides, who is going to run out to the pond and play hockey for my entertainment tomorrow or Monday?  Do you think the other teachers would go out there with me?

Make sure to check the student tab for a hidden piece of homework.  If you do it, it will be worth 10 tickets.  Check it out.  Thin...

Tomorrow is the Big Day

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, January 9, 2013,
I ordered the pizzas and Noaha's dad says he'll bring them around 4 pm tomorrow.  How fun will that be?  I need to go to the store tonight to get some juice boxes and clementines and oreos and maybe some popcorn.  It will be like a real party.  How fun is that?

Come ready to play and get your homework done and eat and have fun.

Tomorrow we have art with Kyle.  Friday we have our concert to attend and then next week we are taking the practice MCA test.  We are swamped.  Wasn't DARE fun today?  D...

Did anyone come and skate at the rink after dark?  It's so cool out there.  I can't wait to have some of you bring your skates tomorrow and test it out for skating.  Also, I am excited to have you stay after school on Thursday and get in some pond hockey or boot hockey games.  Good times.

We are knee deep in math review so...let's get to work!!  See ya tomorrow.

Go Vikings!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Friday, January 4, 2013,
It was a sea of purple in the Village today.  I just kept thinking Mr. Boch would be so disgusted if he could see his room now.  Of course I took a picture of all that Viking support and sent it off to him in an email.  Hope he gets it!!  I bet he's busy cheering for the Packers from afar, don't you think?

The homework this weekend is not your typical stuff so READ the homework tab CAREFULLY and probably more than once to determine what all is required of you.  You really need to be independen...

What a Short Week

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, January 3, 2013,
Three days makes for a really short week.  Still, I think we got a lot in.  We are well on our way to making nice gains on our math review.  Can you believe we take the MCA practice test on January 14 already?  Man, there is so much we haven't gotten to yet!!  After all, we are only on day 75 of a 172 day school year.  Hmm...kind of early for testing it seems.

Please blog a comment that uses some social studies vocabulary like adapt, or migration, or environment.  That's all for today.  Mrs. K...

Happy New Year!!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, January 1, 2013,
I need a vacation from my vacation.  First, there was the trip to Colorado through bad weather and driving through the night.  We had to go the long way around (through South Dakota) which made our 14 hour drive a 16 hour one.  We had to leave Jim and Courtney behind as they were snowed in in Des Moines. We arrived in Colorado Springs at 3 am and then had to get up at 7 am to help decorate for the wedding luncheon.  The wedding was at 10 am and then the lunch right after that.  We had a great...

He also has taken classes at a seminary. He wrote a book called "The Historia" which you can buy on Amazon.com. He was a hockey player and played college hockey at Bethel. His wife is a lawyer worked at a big law firm in Minneapolis. Cool! Hey, guess what. I am a lawyer too!! This will be my 13th year teaching as I practiced law for over 15 years. Teaching is way more fun!! Now they are living in Turkey and simply trying to learn the language and make connections. This year my son will be teaching high school world history at an international school. __________My son Jim lives in Blaine with his wife Courtney. They both graduated from Winona State where they were star pitchers on their baseball and softball teams. Jim graduated from St. Thomas School of Law. He clerked for a judge and now he works for a law firm in Golden Valley. His wife graduated from Des Moines University Medical School where she studied to be a physical therapist. She works for Twin Cities Orthopedics. You can check out pictures of their wedding on the summer vacation tab. __________My son Joe graduated from Moorhead State. He, like his brothers was a good athlete and loved sports. He also is a great singer and performer and was Danny Zuko in Grease, Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, and Curly in Oklahoma--all in WBL high school. He spends his day writing code to create games. He loves that kind of writing, do you? He taught many of my students to write code in Scratch. _________Vlad officially became our son in June of 2010 although we have loved him since we met him a couple years before that. We traveled to his homeland, Latvia, 3 times to make him ours. He has been living with us since March of 2010. He graduated from WBL High School too. He traveled to China with the high school a couple years ago and wants to go back. Can you believe that you can travel with your classmates and friends when you are in high school?
