Wow, Short Weeks are Short!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, February 29, 2012,
But don't forget that I am seeing your parents on Thursday and Friday.  Tomorrow we will be doing an evaluation of ourselves.  You will let your parents know where you are at with things.  Are you ready for that?  Be thinking about what you'd like to tell them in terms of how you are doing in reading, math, social studies, science, MAP testing and more.  Are you behaving?  What are you proud of?  What do you wish you would do better?  These are all the questions you will be asking yourself to...

A Great Start to a Short Week

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, February 28, 2012,
Today seemed to just fly by.  We are so busy right now.  You guys worked really hard in social studies and it is really seeming to come alive in your play.  It's fun to watch you all work so hard.  I have copied the questions for you and so tomorrow you can all spend some time answering them and then you will ALL have 1 bin book done.  That's 1/4 of the required books.  I know many of you have more than that.

So what is your book going to be about?  I think I would want to do a math book of so...

Unbelievable!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Sunday, February 26, 2012,
The Big Bears lost their first round in the section tournament.  Weird!  That is pretty much unheard of in the course of BEAR history.  One year the state tournament, the next year round 1 loss.  So sad.

How are all my little bears?
Good I hope. You have a short week coming up so gear up, we have a lot to get in. Mrs. Kovacs

Pi and I Love 2 Read Day

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, February 22, 2012,
Tomorrow is the big day--we will celebrate reading.  Make sure you have a good book here to read.  We will perform our MLK and Paul Revere readings too.  We will also be attending the 3rd grade music concert.  Wow, what a day!

In the meantime, dream about and think about pi--not the French Silk kind, the math kind.  We will chat about it again for a bit tomorrow, if we have time, but for sure we will move ahead with it on Friday.  That will be the end of unit 4 in math and we are on to unit 6!...

Check out the Snowmen and the Zoo

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Saturday, February 18, 2012,
I spent some time adding pictures to the student tab.  They are of the Village Zoo and Snowmen.  Tomorrow I am going to add some more.  The theme that I left left is "Love to Read" so if I caught you reading (just about all of you) you should check back tomorrow for more pictures.

Enjoy this sunny day.  Get out there and soak up some vitamin D.  Break a leg in the show tonight.  Mrs. Kovacs

Archery Was A Blast

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Friday, February 17, 2012,
And it turns out I'm pretty good at it!  Who knew?  You guys were good at it too.  It seems like a pretty fun sport and I'm going to ask Vlad if he wants to join next year.  He just might like it.

Good luck, I mean "Break a Leg" to those of you who are in the play.  I wish I could go again, it was so good.  I can't wait to hear all about it on Tuesday.

Enjoy your weekend and your day off on Monday.  Did anyone find out about President's Day?  I remember Alec Aikins finging out it started out as...

Opening Night is a Hit!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Friday, February 17, 2012,
Anna and Rachel and Samantha and Antonia were all AMAZING in the show tonight.  Really everyone was!  What a fantastic show.  You need to go and see Rylee (OJ's sister), and the amazing crew from Solensky's room and the other 5th graders like Olivia Thomas and...the list is too long.  Maren is the wicked witch and she is funny.  You really just need to go.  All in all I think Anna and Rachel and the dew drop fairy crew (there were 5 of them) may have had the most stage time.  And they had a l...

Art with Kyle

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, February 15, 2012,
Don't you just love Kyle the Art guy?  Sorry the lesson was overlapping with PE.  I'm not sure how that happened to us.  I let Ms. Dalton in the office know right away so it won't happen again.  The good news is you get a little extra time on Friday to head into the gym and learn all about Archery.  It all works out!

Tomorrow you need to come to school knowing what figurative language is.  It's part of your homework.  Where is Antonia when you need her?  Hope all went well Antonia.            ...

Team SOS Wins the Valentine's Day Cup

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, February 14, 2012,
Sam Yobbie, Olivia Jagoe, and Sam Sperry (SOS makes so much sense now, right?) won the 2nd annual Valentine's Day Cup knee hockey tournament.  It was quite a competition.   There were 5 teams and each team played in two games recordeing 0 points for a loss, 1 point for a tie and 2 points for a win.  After 5 games, scores were tallied and one team was eliminated.  The tourny moved on to bracket play.  After two rounds we had our championship match and SOS beat the Capitols in a rough and rowdy...

Valentine's Day Party Tomorrow

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Monday, February 13, 2012,
So how much time have you earned?  I think you are at 45 minutes plus a minute for every different kid that blogged since Feb. 1.  How many minutes is that?  Please blog the answer so I know how long this party is going to be.

Wear your red and pink tomorrow so we can celebrate the holiday with color.

We have to decorate our door with the theme of a favorite book.  Hmm...any ideas?  Sketch something out and bring it in tomorrow so we can vote and get started.

See you tomorrow.                   ...

Have A Great Weekend

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Saturday, February 11, 2012,
I forgot to get the peeks to you.  It is on this site though so no excuses.  Make sure someone does the mail on Monday and then that you take your mail home.  Lots going on right now so we all have to be mindful of what needs to be done.

First I was at an all day committee meeting for the Gifted and Talented Program, then I was at my uncle's funeral, then I had engineering curriculum training and a half day planning with the other 5th grade teachers (we planned DARE) and now on Monday I have t...

Gone again.  This time for training in an engineering curriculum that will have you cleaning up an oil spill!!  Then the 5th grade teachers met with the DARE officer and did some planning for the rest of the year.  DARE is going to begin on Feb. 22.  You will get 10 lessons from a very cool Washington County Sherriff--way cool!

Tomorrow we have some kids who need to finish their math MAP test.  I am glad you are doing a careful job and taking your time. You can start with that first thing in t...

Alex's Team Won!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Friday, February 3, 2012,
I got to see Alex's team beat the other WBL team in his division.  Wow, it was an exciting game.  Monday I'm going to watch Jordan and Jessie play.  Some of you still need to get me your game times.  Boys, when do you have a basketball game?

We had a smashing day today full of smashing good times.  I will give you two tickets if you blog about our experience and explain why I say it was a smashingly wonderful time.  Have a great weekend.             Mrs. Kovacs...

Fun Day! Loved the Cheering in Math

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, February 1, 2012,
What a wonderful class you are.  I love you.

With that said, I am willing to allow you a half an hour for a celebration of our love for each other, otherwise known as a Valentine's Day Party.  If you want to earn more time for a longer party, you can.  Your behavior yesterday for the sub earned you 10 minutes and I had so much fun today that I'm willing to throw in another 5.  That means you currently have 45 mn available for a party.  How can you earn more, you ask?  A couple ways.  Tomorrow ...

John is a teacher too. A couple years ago he taught at White Bear Lake but for the last couple years he's been teaching social studies to middle school kids at Hope Academy in Minneapolis. He also has taken classes at a seminary. He wrote a book called "The Historia" which you can buy on Amazon.com. He was a hockey player and played college hockey at Bethel. His wife is a lawyer worked at a big law firm in Minneapolis. Cool! Hey, guess what. I am a lawyer too!! This will be my 13th year teaching as I practiced law for over 15 years. Teaching is way more fun!! Now they are living in Turkey and simply trying to learn the language and make connections. This year my son will be teaching high school world history at an international school. __________My son Jim lives in Blaine with his wife Courtney. They both graduated from Winona State where they were star pitchers on their baseball and softball teams. Jim graduated from St. Thomas School of Law. He clerked for a judge and now he works for a law firm in Golden Valley. His wife graduated from Des Moines University Medical School where she studied to be a physical therapist. She works for Twin Cities Orthopedics. You can check out pictures of their wedding on the summer vacation tab. __________My son Joe graduated from Moorhead State. He, like his brothers was a good athlete and loved sports. He also is a great singer and performer and was Danny Zuko in Grease, Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, and Curly in Oklahoma--all in WBL high school. He has a teaching license and did some long term subbing in WBL most recently at Hugo Elementary School. Next he worked at Infinite Campus training teachers on software that his employer makes. He spends his day writing code to create games. He loves that kind of writing, do you? He taught many of my students to write code in Scratch. _________Vlad officially became our son in June of 2010 although we have loved him since we met him a couple years before that. We traveled to his homeland, Latvia, 3 times to make him ours. He has been living with us since March of 2010. He graduated from WBL High School too. He traveled to China with the high school a couple years ago and wants to go back. Can you believe that you can travel with your classmates and friends when you are in high school? He is currently a senior at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls. He spent a semester in Seoul, S. Korea in a study abroad program through River Falls. We will officially be empty nesters. _________My husband John works for Collins Electrical Company as a project manager but he is amazing with computers. He set up this web site for me!! Thanks John.
