Lucky Kids!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, January 27, 2011,
How lucky are you guys?  Sleeping in tomorrow, no homework (that is the big benefit to finals week--no homework) and nice warm winter weather.  Lucky!

The only thing you could be doing as homework is finishing up your mock up or dummy troll book so you can have it edited this weekend and then get your hard cover book on Monday.  The hard cover books are so cool to publish your story in.  I can't wait to read them all!!  Your first grade buddies are going to LOVE them.

Enjoy your day off.  Think...

Finals Day!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, January 26, 2011,
Listen to tomorrow, MAP testing in the morning, math unit 4 test in the later morning, spelling test sometime and Chapter 4 test in the afternoon.  Am I still teaching 4th grade?

Ok, spelling, no big deal we practiced all week.

MAP just do your best and show what you know and no worries because it's a benchmark for information only--I just need to  see who might need more help.

Social Studies--we'll be doing it like a scavenger hunt and you can use your notes and the maps and your book and mayb...

Meeting Day

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, January 25, 2011,
We started the day with meetings about classroom behaviors.  Be sure and tell mom and/or dad which group you were meeting with.  There were 4--always on task and ready to learn, usually on task and often ready to learn, starting to lean toward interfering with the learning of others and with your own learning and finally, often interfering with learning both your own and others.  Which group were you in?  How did you feel about being in that group?  We are going to think about that tomorrow a...

Yikes!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Monday, January 24, 2011,
All I can say about this day is Yikes.  Also, I hope not to have another one like it for quite some time.  Weeds sprouted up all over and it was quite a tiresome job being the gardner today.  I think some of the flowers were feeling a bit choked out by the weeds as well.  I do know that the weeds are keeping the flowers from blooming and reaching their full potential.   I will be getting some serious tools for getting rid of the weeds.  If you think some of your behavior was a bit "weedy" tod...

Factorville, Trolls and Polygons

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Friday, January 21, 2011,
What a week!  Our review of area and perimeter and a look into volume has brought us to the city Factorville.  It's looking pretty great.  I can't wait to see what next week will bring for it.

Polygons are pretty fun.  We can rotate them, translate them, and reflect them.  All of those moves are called transformations--meaning you are transforming it into something else!  Cool.  For 2 tickets write a blog comment that explains which transformation is the slide, which one is the and which one i...

Troll Art

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Friday, January 21, 2011,
The troll art is wonderful!  Way to go class.

We took practice MCA math tests on the computer today.  We are going to get to work on it again next week.  The MCA tests are not until April but the fact that the math one is on the computer is brand new.  For 2 tickets, blog a comment about your opinion regarding the MCA test being on line.  What is good about it, what is bad about it.  This is just your prediction and opinion--no worries, there is no right or wrong answer.

Tomorrow will be an IN ...

Trolls Are Popping Up Everywhere!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, January 18, 2011,
Old folk tales are a bit harsh by today's standards.  YIKES!!  Tell mom and dad about the Ash Lad from Norway.  We are finding that Trolls have a pretty consistent personality in all the stories we are reading.  They are...For 2 tickets blog a comment that lists a few troll traits and then tell which story you think those traits show up in.

2 tickets to EVERYONE who blogs me a comment reminding me to bring snow for our village tomorrow so we can start to lay it out.  Some of the stores and bui...

How Was Your Day Off?

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, January 18, 2011,
I wouldn't know about a day off since teachers had to work!  Oh well, I learned some cool stuff that I am going to teach you next time we have science.  And that will be soon!

Hope you all had a fun day.  It was nice out so I hope you skated outside or made snowmen or snow angels or something.  Today's BHTQ has to do with angles and angles.  Which one is the one we are measuring in math and which one is a guardian from heaven?  That will get you 2 tickets.  You can have 2 more tickets if you t...

Trickster Trolls

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, January 13, 2011,
Per and the Dahla Horse is a great story that lays out many many characteristics of trolls.  Today's BHTQ is, what are some characteristics of Trolls that you learned from this story OR from The Trouble with Trolls by Jan Brett.  I will give you 1 ticket for every characteristics you can come up with.  You should use different ones than everyone else AND there is a cap of 6 tickets.  Good Luck.

For an immediate trip to the prize bucket, you must blog two things 1.  what is the reality and what...

Tonic Sol-Fa Again?

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, January 11, 2011,
You guys are starting to sing along with my Tonic Sol-Fa CD!  Fun!!  They are the group I saw in concert with my whole family over Christmas break.  They sang Christmas music.  Now they are coming to Maplewood Community Center, where the Ashland Productions put on a play last year.  Cool!!  I am going to go again.  Probably Friday.  Maybe I'll buy another CD.

So, we need a BHTQ.  Hmmm...let me think.  Austin was here and he and I tried and tried but just couldn't come up with something.  He's ...

Marvin and Jessie and Self-Control

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Monday, January 10, 2011,
Self-control is a great topic for a Marvin and Jessie skit.  To be honest, self-control is what is missing from many of you when it comes to classroom work.  Today's BHTQ has to do with what you think self-control is and what behaviors could work to improve by exercising some self-control.  For example, when I am reading a good book, I can't put it down.  I could use some self-control to make myself set it aside and make supper for my starving family or go to bed before I fall asleep in the c...

Good Morning Everyone!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Saturday, January 8, 2011,
I was exactly as exhausted as I thought I was.  We didn't get home from Jake's hockey game in Deleno until 11:30 last night and I went to bed and I just got up RIGHT NOW!!  It's 10:00 13!!  I haven't slep that long in over...ok, a week cause that's what we did all vacation.  Just think, if we were in school we'd be heading to math IE now and then specialist.

I want to thank Antonia Green for laughing at all my little comments that seem funny to her.  She must get my sense of humor and when s...

Hmmm...A Long Week?

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, January 6, 2011,
So who thinks this was a long week?  I need a nap.

Tomorrow we are going to "practice" Math IE behavior and I am going to list the possible games available for the day.  Next week there will only be 2 options for math games and you must pick one of those when your team lands on the "game" rotation.  Having too many options is making for too long deciding, not enough time playing the games.  So far all the groups are doing well on their "book" day, the "card" station has been hit or miss on suc...

Winter Village/Scene in Math IE

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, January 5, 2011,
You may feel free to start thinking about what cool things you might want to bring to make our winter village/scene wonderful.  Do you have snow?  How about a little car or two?  What ideas do you have for trees?  After each group has had the opportunity to come over and work on the area and perimieter of the buildings we will move on to creating the village scene.  Each IE group will be able to "build" their buildings next week.

I discovered how to get into my GLOG page and so tomorrow we a...

So Many New Things!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, January 4, 2011,

We started new math IE projects today.  They'll probably last through mid February.  How did you like what your group did?  That's the BHTQ:  blog a comment that explains what your group did today and how you liked it.  2 tickets.  If you go on and write about which center you are most excited to try, then I will give you 2 more tickets for a total of 4!  wow!!
Finally, did you understand the complicated rather small schedule on the board that explains where your group will travel tomorrow?  J...

Good Day People!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, January 4, 2011,
I thought we had a good day in the classroom today.  Good times, good times.  You were all very nice about listening to our read aloud story.  Hey, who is the author again?  That is today's BHTQ:  blog a comment about who the author of our new book and my best present ever is AND write a brief one or two sentence summary of what the book is about so far.

Tomorrow we will work on our mummies and do a bit of work with our new reading unit--"That's Amazing!"  We will work on the vocabulary.  Star...

BHTQ

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Sunday, January 2, 2011,
People are having trouble finding the BHTQ.  It has to do with the accapella group Tonic Sol Fa and the questions are in the blog comment that starts with "How's".  Anyway, I forgot to write in that you can have an immediate trip to the prize bucket if you figure out the cost of the tickets for 11 of us to go.  Go back and check that blog and it will all make sense to you.

By the way, the concert was AMAZING!!

So, I will give you one more ticket opportunity:  blog a comment that tells how long ...

Jamie Lyn Kovacs I am married to John Kovacs and have 5 sons, John age 33, Jim age 31, Joe age 26, Jake age 24, Vlad age 22. I also have 3 grandchildren, Jack and Lydia, who are the kids of my oldest son and his wife, and Baby Kennedy who is the newborn of my second son and his wife. The older kids are 5 and 2. My family lives in White Bear Lake. ____________My son John is married and lives in Turkey with his wife Pamela and son Jack and daughter Lydia. Hey, that makes me a grandmother--yikes! John is a teacher too. A couple years ago he taught at White Bear Lake but for the last couple years he's been teaching social studies to middle school kids at Hope Academy in Minneapolis. He also has taken classes at a seminary. He wrote a book called "The Historia" which you can buy on Amazon.com. He was a hockey player and played college hockey at Bethel. His wife is a lawyer worked at a big law firm in Minneapolis. Cool! Hey, guess what. I am a lawyer too!! This will be my 13th year teaching as I practiced law for over 15 years. Teaching is way more fun!! Now they are living in Turkey and simply trying to learn the language and make connections. This year my son will be teaching high school world history at an international school. __________My son Jim lives in Blaine with his wife Courtney. They both graduated from Winona State where they were star pitchers on their baseball and softball teams. Jim graduated from St. Thomas School of Law. He clerked for a judge and now he works for a law firm in Golden Valley. His wife graduated from Des Moines University Medical School where she studied to be a physical therapist. She works for Twin Cities Orthopedics. You can check out pictures of their wedding on the summer vacation tab. __________My son Joe graduated from Moorhead State. He, like his brothers was a good athlete and loved sports. He also is a great singer and performer and was Danny Zuko in Grease, Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, and Curly in Oklahoma--all in WBL high school. He has a teaching license and did some long term subbing in WBL most recently at Hugo Elementary School. Next he worked at Infinite Campus training teachers on software that his employer makes. He got to travel all over the United States. He is married to Emily, and there are pictures of them you can check out on the vacation tab as well. Emily is a pharmacist for CVS in Targets. They just moved to Washington DC so he could attend George Washington University and get an MBA. __________My son Jake graduated from University of Minnesota with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science. He is a superstar in math. He was a TA for a professor in the computer science department. He really likes to golf and was on the White Bear Lake golf team. He worked at Gem Lake so if you ever golf there, you may have seen Jake. Do you like golf? As soon as he graduated he started working full time at a company that writes online computer games. He spends his day writing code to create games. He loves that kind of writing, do you? He taught many of my students to write code in Scratch. _________Vlad officially became our son in June of 2010 although we have loved him since we met him a couple years before that. We traveled to his homeland, Latvia, 3 times to make him ours. He has been living with us since March of 2010. He graduated from WBL High School too. He traveled to China with the high school a couple years ago and wants to go back. Can you believe that you can travel with your classmates and friends when you are in high school? He is currently a senior at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls. He spent a semester in Seoul, S. Korea in a study abroad program through River Falls. We will officially be empty nesters. _________My husband John works for Collins Electrical Company as a project manager but he is amazing with computers. He set up this web site for me!! Thanks John.
