Sports Across White Bear

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Sunday, February 27, 2011,
I started my day at 1 am picking Vlad and 4 friends up from Trollhaugen where they were snowboarding.  Then bed.  Up at 9:00 and I was at Central by 9:25 to see Gavin and Josh and really just about every 4th grade Hugo boy who plays basketball play basketball.  Deckland and Racine and Donavon, and and and...there really are too many to mention. Then I hit the club where I was on the treadmill for 45 minutes.  By 1:45 I was at the Vadnais Sports Center where I saw Nate, Jordan, OJ, Maddie's si...

Only 3 Days Next Week!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Friday, February 25, 2011,
I can't believe it is conferences again next week already.  Where is this year going?  Then it's just one week and we're off for a week for spring break.  Wow.  Then we start the testing stretch -- practice for and taking of the MCA and spring MAP.  This year is flying by!!

Next week we will wrap up magnets.  It is taking us longer than I thought but we'll move ahead after conferences.  We are also going to start the southeast region next week.  That should be fun too.

Have a great weekend.  ...

Did you feel The Force?

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, February 24, 2011,
Isn't it fun to be a scientist laboring away in a mad scientist lab?  Fun stuff with magnets and poker chips!  Did you find the immediate trip to the prize bucket?  Hint:  it has to do with science.

There has been a request for a BHTQ.  Here it is--what is the page number your lit circle group is supposed to read to?  Blog a response to this question and you can have 1 little candy heart--not the whole box, just one piece of candy.

We will continue with our science investigation tomorrow so if ...

Dr. Lovett was our Guest Reader!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, February 24, 2011,
Dr. Lovett read Letters from Obedience School to us today.  It was very funny the way he "acted" out the parts of Ike and Gertrude LaRue.  He was very melodramatic as he read.  We will need to write him thank you notes tomorrow.  We will need to be sure and pull the word melodramatic out of our pockets and throw it around in our notes that we write.

We also need to do get well cards to Zach R.  We will be busy writing tomorrow.

Also tomorrow we will work on the magnet investigation called "Brea...

Going to the Dogs

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, February 22, 2011,

We are going to the dogs in room 2505.  Blog a comment that tells why I am saying that and I will give you 2 tickets.  What is our theme for reading--what are we looking for in our dog story?  Blog the RIGHT answer to that and you can have an immediate trip to the prize bucket.

So, how do you like your new lit circle book?  I know the group I was listening to already has the first two vocab words done.  How far are you?  Did you and your group look through the packet to see what you need to be...

Happy President's Day

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Monday, February 21, 2011,
So we had another shot at having a snow day but it didn't happen because we already didn't have school.  Blog a comment telling whether you think we would have had a snow day or not and you can have a couple tickets.  I think we might have!  Dr. Lovett is coming on Wed. to read to us and I think we should ask him if he would have called a snow day or not.  We can also ask him what it takes to be a snow day.  Maybe Sunday would have been a snow day if it was a school day.

What are you going t...

Dinner at the Kovacs'

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Saturday, February 19, 2011,
Antonia and her friend Brooke were amazing dinner guests.  They made beautiful place cards with everyone's name on them and then helped set the table with the lovely china that was my grandmothers.  They went up and down the slide a hundred times, played foosball, pool, and enjoyed a fire in the fireplace.  We had steak and potatoes and salad and green beans and strawberries and blueberries and rolls and...make your own sundaes to wrap it all up.  Good times.  Vlad and Jake beat the girls the...

Valentine's Day is Monday

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Saturday, February 12, 2011,
Be sure and remind all the men in your life that all the women in their lives are going to want to get a Valentine.

Hey, kids who left early on Friday, great news!  Your classmates earned 50 minutes of party time on top of the 1/2 hour I was ready to give you.  That's an 80 minute party or 1 hour and 20 minutes so it looks like our party will need to start at 2:10 in order to get it all in.  There is a possibility of earning a few more minutes on Monday but don't go all crazy on me, we reall...

Hey kid, That's Talking!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, February 10, 2011,
Some kids in this room are having a hard time understanding what talking is.  I have been pointing it out.  Weird that you could get all the way to 4th grade and not know what talking sounds like.  Hmmm...Once we figure it out I would be happy to do some DEAR or silent reading time.  Right now we simply can not do it.

The troll books are coming along and look AMAZING!!  They give a whole new meaning to the unit name, "That's Amazing."  Way to go 4th graders.

Tomorrow I am going to spill the bea...

Marvino and Jessiette

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Monday, February 7, 2011,
Today's Marvin and Jessie skit was all about RESPECT!!  Do you need to beef up your respect in your words, tone of voice and actions.  Before you watched the skit did you think of your behavior of playing with something while the teacher is talking or putting your feet up on the desk as disrespectful?  It is from the teacher's point of view.

Tomorrow we will be doing a quick quiz in math.  You need to have a way to multiply a double digit number by a single digit one.  We have worked on 4 or 5...

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Sunday, February 6, 2011,
Today was a very busy day.  If you want to earn two tickets, then find my response to Zacman in the blog and read about everything I did today.  If you blog a comment that tells who I saw in the hospital today, then you'll get the tickets.  For an immediate trip to the prize bucket tell what I will be doing during the Super Bowl game tomorrow night.

I saw Nate and Sam and Hunter and Olivia and Antonia and Brock and...at the winter carnival at Oneka.  It was super fun and there was LOTS to do t...

Urban v. Rural

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, February 3, 2011,
There is a funny line on a TV show where one of the stars is telling about a movie she is in and it's called The Rural Juror.  Try saying that a few times fast.

You can have a trip to the prize bucket if you blog a comment that tells how far your group got in social studies today.  Did you do housing? How about employment or transportation?  Did you do a thourough job and tell how each item is in urban v. rural areas and then tell the + and the - of each item in urban v. rural?  Did your group...

How Was Your Day?

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, February 1, 2011,
I would imagine your answers will vary.  I will give you an immediate trip to the prize bucket if you blog a comment that tells how your day was and then tells WHY is was that way.

Good day:  Some kids were amazingly on task and rock stars in the class room today.  [bad day:  some were not]
Good day:  Some kids are ready for large number multiplication.  [bad day:  some are not and those are the ones who

Lunch with the Head Hauncho

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, February 1, 2011,
OJ, the ever outgoing and thoughtful kid that she is, invited the Superintendant to eat at our table today.  How fun is that?  He gave her a new nick name that I like--Pippi!  How many of you know something about Pippi Longstockings?  For 2 tickets, blog a comment about Pippi Longstockings to show me what you know.

Your troll books are coming along nicely.  However, some of you need to wrap up the mock books.  I am going to see if we can get some 5th grade editors to come help us get them read...
