The Weather Outside is FRIGHTFUL!!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, December 29, 2011,
Where's the snow?  How can we go sledding if there is no snow?  I do see people skating on the lake but...be careful people, it hasn't been cold.  Stay near the edge where it is shallow please.  Do you know what kind of ice is safe ice?  NONE OF IT!!  Be careful.

Jim and Courtney have gone home, John and Pam are at her mom's and are house shopping with her today.  They will come back to our house on Saturday and will be at the Kovacs Christmas tomorrow night in Prior Lake.  They are starting t...

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Monday, December 26, 2011,
I hope you are all having a very Merry Christmas and getting to spend all kinds of fun times with cousins and brothers and sisters and aunts and uncles and grandpas and grandmas and your mom and dad.  My kids are all home now and we have a house full and it's loud and happy and fun and exhausting.  Wonderful times.  The boys are playing pool and hooking up Apple TV and deciding what to do with all the tools they got for Christmas and playing a board game and...eating.  Of course they are doin...

Ho Ho Ho!!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, December 22, 2011,
What a day.  We had a lot of fun.  I think everybody left happy.  The kids kind of got to do their own thing, we had a fire in the smart board fireplace (one of them even had a guy stoking the fire and poking it), some guys played poker, we had a lot of finger knitting and pom pom making going one and later we watched class movies.  Good times.

I hope the kids blog me.  I know I will miss everybody.  Let's hope we get some snow and can get in some sledding and outdoor skating and maybe some sn...

Are you ready for this year to be done?  Tomorrow is it, the last day of school for the year.  When we come back it will be 2012 and you will be that much closer to middle school.  This year is flying by!!

Come cozy and comfy tomorrow.  Come with a book to read in front of the fireplace.  Bring yarn for finger knitting.  Bring a snack if you like--to share if you like.  Bring your happy self ready for a great day of celebrating together.  Don't you love Holiday parties?  I do.             See ...

Fractions and More Pieces of Things

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, December 20, 2011,

Today we considered fractions and which ones are bigger and how to add them and how to get a common denominator if we don't already have one.  Hmmm...

Tonight, look around your house for some fractions.  Then blog a comment about it and you may go straight to the prize bucket.  Here's mine:  Our classroom has 5 sections of big windows.  3/5ths of them are on the same side of the room that my desk is on and 2/5 of them are not.  More of them are on my side of the room.  3/5 + 2/5 = 5/5 or ALL t...

3 More Days until the Holiday Break

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Monday, December 19, 2011,
Joe is home, Jake is one test away and John and Pam will fly in soon.  Jim and Courtney won't get here until the 25th but wow, it's starting to feel a lot like Christmas.

We are going to finish up our Long Lake storybooks this week.  We are also going to get a cool math project.  We need to cover some adding of fractions and thinking about how that compares to adding decimals so...fun stuff with pieces of things.  You will have the entire break to work on your project.  It will be fun.

Be sure ...

Long Lake Revisited!!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Saturday, December 17, 2011,
Wow!  What a wonderful week we had at Long Lake Conservation Camp.  I loved nearly everything about it.  My favorite part was that we were outside so much.  I just love learning things outside.  Do you?  My least favorite part was that there were not inches and inches of snow on the ground.  Oh well, you can't control the weather.  The staff did a great job coming up with alternative super fun things for us to do even though we couldn't play in the snow.  I loved it.  Did you?  Blog about it....

Alaska, The Final Frontier

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Friday, December 9, 2011,
Remember, I am writing to you from Alaska today.  It is 10:30 your time but only 7:30 here.  So we got tickets for the cheapest way here and that brought us to Salt Lake City, UT first, then on to Seattle, Washington and finally Anchorage, AK.  Here's the problem--when we got to Salt Lake City (which really isn't on the way) and switched planes, the new plane was full so we had to turn over our carry on luggage to the guys on the plane.  Well, to make a long story short, when we got to Alaska...

Decimal Art is Fun

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, December 8, 2011,
So it seems like you all like to make decimal art.  It is pretty fun.  I will make lots of copies of the 100 squares sheets for you so you can make them during read aloud and other times when you have a free minute. I have another decimal project lined up for tomorrow and then we are going to talk about yet a third idea and an assignment for you to think about and possibly work on over the holiday break.

What do you think we should make for our families for gifts whether they are Christmas gif...

Desks are Clean, Ms Dahlem was In and We are Moving Forward

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, December 7, 2011,
I think we can all keep it up--I mean, of course, the rad study skills we have when Ms Dahlem is in the room.  I wonder what it is about Ms Dahlem that makes the blurters stop bluring.  If you have a proposed answer to my wonder, blog it and you may proceed straight to the prize bucket tomorrow.

I have some suckers we could give to Mrs. Solensky's class as payment.  If you blog tonight, you can be the ones to take them the payment.  I wonder what I should do with any extra fundage I have.  E...

Wrong Specialists listed on the Peek

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Monday, December 5, 2011,
Apparently I listed the specialists incorrectly!  Today was media and tomorrow is PE.  You have music on Wed., Media on Thursday and PE on Friday.  Does that make sense?

Kyle the Art Guy taught us about drawing human faces today.  We made a template to put underneath our drawings to give us the right dimensions.  Then we got to create some cartoon guys using the 6 oval method.  Fun!  Kyle is hilarious.

Tomorrow Ms. Dahlem is spending an hour or so in our room. You need to work hard and be on ta...

Poor Little Pinch

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, December 1, 2011,
We still don't know if Pinch is alive or dead.  I am a bit worried because this author is not shy about killing people off.  I wonder if poor old Pinch is a goner.  Maybe he will just be lost for a while and they'll refind him years from now when he's grown up and nicer.  Maybe a Dakota Indian will find him like in the Legend of MN book and he'll be held captive.  Maybe some white settlers will find him and adopt him.  Hmm...I wonder when we'll find out.  Blog a comment about what you think h...

All About Me

Jamie Lyn Kovacs I am married to John Kovacs and have 5 sons, John age 33, Jim age 31, Joe age 26, Jake age 24, Vlad age 22. I also have 3 grandchildren, Jack and Lydia, who are the kids of my oldest son and his wife, and Baby Kennedy who is the newborn of my second son and his wife. The older kids are 5 and 2. My family lives in White Bear Lake. ____________My son John is married and lives in Turkey with his wife Pamela and son Jack and daughter Lydia. Hey, that makes me a grandmother--yikes! John is a teacher too. A couple years ago he taught at White Bear Lake but for the last couple years he's been teaching social studies to middle school kids at Hope Academy in Minneapolis. He also has taken classes at a seminary. He wrote a book called "The Historia" which you can buy on Amazon.com. He was a hockey player and played college hockey at Bethel. His wife is a lawyer worked at a big law firm in Minneapolis. Cool! Hey, guess what. I am a lawyer too!! This will be my 13th year teaching as I practiced law for over 15 years. Teaching is way more fun!! Now they are living in Turkey and simply trying to learn the language and make connections. This year my son will be teaching high school world history at an international school. __________My son Jim lives in Blaine with his wife Courtney. They both graduated from Winona State where they were star pitchers on their baseball and softball teams. Jim graduated from St. Thomas School of Law. He clerked for a judge and now he works for a law firm in Golden Valley. His wife graduated from Des Moines University Medical School where she studied to be a physical therapist. She works for Twin Cities Orthopedics. You can check out pictures of their wedding on the summer vacation tab. __________My son Joe graduated from Moorhead State. He, like his brothers was a good athlete and loved sports. He also is a great singer and performer and was Danny Zuko in Grease, Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, and Curly in Oklahoma--all in WBL high school. He has a teaching license and did some long term subbing in WBL most recently at Hugo Elementary School. Next he worked at Infinite Campus training teachers on software that his employer makes. He got to travel all over the United States. He is married to Emily, and there are pictures of them you can check out on the vacation tab as well. Emily is a pharmacist for CVS in Targets. They just moved to Washington DC so he could attend George Washington University and get an MBA. __________My son Jake graduated from University of Minnesota with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science. He is a superstar in math. He was a TA for a professor in the computer science department. He really likes to golf and was on the White Bear Lake golf team. He worked at Gem Lake so if you ever golf there, you may have seen Jake. Do you like golf? As soon as he graduated he started working full time at a company that writes online computer games. He spends his day writing code to create games. He loves that kind of writing, do you? He taught many of my students to write code in Scratch. _________Vlad officially became our son in June of 2010 although we have loved him since we met him a couple years before that. We traveled to his homeland, Latvia, 3 times to make him ours. He has been living with us since March of 2010. He graduated from WBL High School too. He traveled to China with the high school a couple years ago and wants to go back. Can you believe that you can travel with your classmates and friends when you are in high school? He is currently a senior at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls. He spent a semester in Seoul, S. Korea in a study abroad program through River Falls. We will officially be empty nesters. _________My husband John works for Collins Electrical Company as a project manager but he is amazing with computers. He set up this web site for me!! Thanks John. He is the IT guy for my mom, his parents, and our whole family!! My husband and I have a cute teddy bear puppy who is 1 and a half years old. He is very spoiled.
