For decimals, think MONEY

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Friday, April 29, 2011,
Today's BHTQ has to do with decimals.  What is the decimal equivilant to 1/4 ?  Hmmm...all you have to do is think about money and what 1/4 of a dollar is and think about how you would write that.

So what are the place values on the right side of a decimal point?

I just found out that my son Jim's graduation ceremony from college is on Friday, May 6.  We (him included) thought it was on Saturday.  I have to work this out because I can not be gone during your MCA math test.  Having it on a Frida...

Our Heads are Spinning!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, April 27, 2011,
We will be starting decimals tomorrow.  Why do decimals tie into fractions?  Hmm...I will give an immediate trip to the prize bucket to anyone who blogs their ideas on how the two are the same.  Fractions and decimals.

We will look at and consider the math assessment you took today.  I think that in some cases you made it harder than it really is.  The illustrations actually gave away the answer.  Did you look at them?  You will get a chance to relook at them tomorrow.

So about decimals, you ...

Jake Scored in the High School Golf Match!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, April 26, 2011,
The Burgundy Jacket winner got 3rd on his team at the High School Golf Match today.  I keep calling it a meet and that is bugging him hugely.  Match, meet, what's the difference?  At least I don't say how did your golf game go today?  Who performed at the half time show?  What inning did you score in? and stuff like that.

I am really tired today.  You reminded me why we don't do math in the afternoon.  I know mixed numbers and improper fractions are new but...not really.  Surely you've thought...

Who are Your Hereos?

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, April 21, 2011,
We focused on hereos today and it was fun.  Most of you count your parents as heroes and many of you count your siblings as heroes too.  Very cool.  Mr. Doebler was our guest reader and he came in and read us a good book about a baseball player who is now very famous and plays for the Yankees.  His story was about a game in which he played bad.  What did he do about that?  Did he give up and say "baseball is stupid" or "I hate baseball" or even "I'm no good at baseball"?  No way.  He dug in, ...

One Down, Three to Go

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, April 20, 2011,
Looking at it a different way, we are done with the MCA reading but we have the MCA math to do and then the MAP reading and the MAP math.  If there are 4 different tests (MCA reading, MCA math, MAP reading, MAP math) and we have one of them totally done, what fraction of the tests that we have to take have we completed?  Blog it and go to the prize bucket tomorrow.

Overall, how do you think you did on the reading test?  Blog your ideas and get a couple of tickets tomorrow.  Tomorrow we will st...

One Down, One To Go

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, April 20, 2011,
Day one of MCA testing went pretty well.  We did have Courtney gone which is a bummer cause she'll need to make it up.  Everyone who took the test in our room did a great job and tried really hard.  I saw kids checking their work, rebubbling things that weren't perfect and more.

An immediate trip to the prize bucket to everyone who blogs a comment saying how they think the test went.  No specifics just give your opinion on how you did.

Cup stacking and cribbage were fun.  Fraction strips were f...

Good Night Sleep, Good Breakfast, Healthy Snack!!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Monday, April 18, 2011,
No homework, just rest, eat right, take a walk or get outside and play, put the thinking in your backpack so you have it tomorrow and be here bright and early ready to shine.  I know you will.  I am excited for the room arrangement and to see you working hard.

Would you like a beanie baby on your work table tomorrow?  Remind me and I will get them out for you.  A little soft animal helps everything.

See you tomorrow.

Next Week's Motto: Show What You Know!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Friday, April 15, 2011,
Remember to have your top ten test taking tips book here on Monday so we can write our poems and do our cartoons.  Here are my poems about test taking:

I really love to take each test,
Testing lets me show my best,
What else would I do, rest?
No! I'd rather take a test.

or the ever sarcastic

Testing, testing, is so fun
It's so fun for everyone.
Who would rather jump and run?
Not Me! Give me a test for fun!

Blog a poem and that will get you a trip to the prize bucket which is now ...

My son John, who is the author of The Historia, The Search for Wisdom, is coming to town on Friday.  He will be here through Wednesday.  He can come in and sign books so if anyone (or anyone's brother) is interested in having a book signed by the author, you can bring in your $11.99 and buy a book.  I will give you the book right away and then  it can be signed by the author on Monday!  He plans to come on in and say  HI.  Then you will have worked with all my kids except the two who live at ...

Remainders as Fractions and Decimals, Oh My!!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, April 13, 2011,
Kids, do your homework at home and bring it done tomorrow.  Sad day in math today when I discovered that only 8-10 kids had their math done.  I trust you guys to do what your work is, now I am sad and will have to go back to checking it daily and making consequences immediate.  Sad for us both. :(

Alliteration club was really fun.  Gunner rocked at Krypto and I found the cool Krypto board Ms. Case made.  She rocks.  I forgot how good at cup staking some of my last year's kids are.  We need to ...

What a Beautiful Day!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Monday, April 11, 2011,
This was a beautiful spring day.  Lovely.

The BHTQ which is an immediate trip to the prize bucket is hiding on a different page.  Good luck.  I think there are actually two--if you do them both you may go to the bucket once and then have 4 tickets for the other prize.

Can you cut an apple in half?  What about a sandwich?  How about a pizza?  These are all great examples of whole things that you can easily divide into pieces which is what fractions are all about.  Do you think you can divide a c...

I LOVE SCIENCE!!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Saturday, April 9, 2011,
Today's BHTQ which will get you the key to find the locked up prize bucket is :  What is Bernoulli's principle of air pressure?  Blog a comment that explains what you think it is and tell about 1 of the demonstrations the 3M Wizards showed us.  [hint: one involved a plunger!]

The 3M Wizards were my favorite station at Science Day.  Well, actually, they were my second favorite.  The science fair with all of your wonderful projects was my actual favorite.  You guys rocked.  I was so proud of you...

I Didn't Win Again!!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, April 7, 2011,
So I was one of the 6 finalists for WBL teacher of the year but Jake's math teacher, Mr. Danielson was the one they chose.  Man. that's two years in a row of having to settle for just being a finalist.  How many teachers does WBLAS have?  Hmmm...the high schools, the two middle schools, the 8 elementary schools.  I wonder how many there are?  I wonder where a person could go to look it up.  I will give an immediate trip to the prize bucket to anyone who blogs a comment about how to look it up...

Book Fair

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, April 6, 2011,
I would love to take you to the book fair tomorrow but I am willing to skip it if you can't settle down--we skipped it today.  :(

The science fair projects continue to ROCK!!  Way to go kids.  I am so excited for the science day on Friday.  Remember to come at 5 and stand by your project and take it home whenever you leave whether it's 5:30, 7 or 8!!

Today's BHTQ has to do with what else we have planned for Friday.  Sure, it is the science, art, book fair and ice cream social. But that's not en...

MICE! How cool is that?

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, April 5, 2011,
I still can't believe Courtney's way cool parents let her do a science project involving mice.  WOW!!  If you know Courtney, tell her to see if she can bring the mice in to school.  We'd love to have them visit!

Secondly, can you believe we were double crossed by Mrs. Olson?  Weird?!  Anyway, our dance was so cute.  I love the way Rachel and Antonia modified the rat dance from the play to be a goose dance today.  Then I wrote a cool poem and we gathered the pop and the candy.  Hmmm...we trust ...

April Fools!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Friday, April 1, 2011,
What a day.  First, we were pranked by Rachel Miller when she claimed to have found a note on the classroom floor that appeared to be from Ms. Dahlem saying that I had to divide my class prize bucket between all the girls and not give out any prizes to the boys.  Weird.  Then, Maddie had some donut seeds for healthy donuts (that was the dead give away that this was a prank) that said on the seed package that you needed to plant them in your yard on April 1.  Too bad we have so much snow.  The...
