Happy New Year!!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Friday, December 31, 2010,
Hope everyone is having a great vacation.  Technically, today is our last day of vacation as we just have the weekend left.  I am not rested and ready to return to school.  I do miss you all but still...

I have some BHTQ things in the my last big post so go there to find it.  So far only Antonia has earned the tickets.  As a hint, I will just say that the Tonic Sol Fa concert I went to was AMAZING!  I have a new favortie song!

Tonight I am going to my brother's new house.  It has a gymnasium in...

How's Your Holiday?

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, December 29, 2010,
I am just getting over a bit of a bug.  Yucky!!
My kids are all still here and we are having so much fun.  Today we worked at Feed My Starving Children for a couple hours.  Actually, my brothers and their families and my mom went too and it was so much fun!!  My son Johnny and his wife went last week too.  It was his 4th time!

I want to go to a concert tomorrow night--Tonic Sol Fa is in St. Cloud for a few shows.  We saw them a few years ago and they are so good.  The are an Accapella Band.  F...

Merry Christmas!!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, December 22, 2010,
We had quite a lovely party with a treat table that was unbelievable.  Pot luck treats always produces plenty of food!  From popcorn to oreos to candy canes to cheetos, we had it all!  We even had orange juice to keep us all healthy!

I want to compliment you all on being great gift receivers.  How gracious you all were when you opened your little gift bag from me.  My son Joe and I made the tetris games and worked on them until 2:00 am.  I wasn't sure you would think they were fun but everyone...

Reindeer Treat Bags~Fun!!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, December 22, 2010,
For me the highlight of today was making the reindeer treat bags.  Everybody did such a great job working together and getting the project done.  There was real team work, some assembly line work and some really great attitudes in the room.  Good times!  I just know our first grade buddies are going to LOVE the treat bags we give them tomorrow.  Be ready to explain to them several times what they need to do with them.

For two tickets, blog a comment that tells what you will say to your first g...

Indoor or Outdoor, That is the Question

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, December 21, 2010,
I just spent a couple hours I can never have back watching the Vikings game.  I had to check it out--to see how the outdoor playing was going in this weather.  Today's BHTQ is...do you think football in Minnesota should be played outdoors or indoors?  Why?  If you contemplate this question and answer it in 3 sentences or more you can have 4 tickets.

Also, what do you think...is there any chance we'll have a snow day?  How can we have 20 inches of snow and not have missed even 1 second of schoo...

Reindeer Power Points are Impressive

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Saturday, December 18, 2010,

The reindeer power points are impressive.  The kids have figured out how to change the slide design, animate their slides, drop in pictures and other fun things.  They are all so different and all really cool.  We had a couple of kids lose their shows but I had already seen them and they rocked so no worries, Carley, you already accomplished most of the project.  Anything you do from here on out is bonus.  We will finish them on Monday and I'll see if there's a way I can send them to your hom...

Gettin' A Little Crazy

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, December 16, 2010,
So, it's getting a little crazy in room 2505.  Some kids need to take it down a notch and revisit what good behaviors look like.

In other news, our reindeer research is coming along and tomorrow we will finish our power points.  Some kids have some really good ideas and their slides are going to be really fun to look at.  Did you know

Tomorrow we will have a spelling test, a review for our math test, reading lit circle group meetings, present making and another science movie.  Good times.

To up...

Great Work, People

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, December 15, 2010,
We had a great day of learning.  I met with a few kids about behavior in the room.  I will meet with more tomorrow and finish up on Friday.  Everyone will get a chance to hear what I think and tell me what they think.

The computer lab went much better today.  We had the eleven 5th graders who didn't go to Long Lake helping out so they answered many of our questions and things went pretty smoothly.  Mrs. Severson was a great help too.  Kids are thinking of such great ideas and fun ways to displ...

Too Much Going On?

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, December 14, 2010,
Maybe I am overwhelming you but ouch man, this class needs to settle down and focus.  Today we had the lap top lab.  Let me just say that we are researching reindeer and making a power point about them and...today was painful.  Mrs. Severson was trying to help but...she would say, "Listen now, I'm going to show you how to copy and print and insert a picture onto  a slide in your power point" and as soon as she was done someone would look up and say, "How do I insert a picture into my power po...

Dropping Like Flies

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, December 14, 2010,
We started the day down 1 (Rachel--hope you're back tomorrow) and then Yobbie went home sick with a stomach ache, then Josh with a headache, then Antonia with an appointment to check out her cough.  YIKES!!  We don't want to get close to Mrs. Shea's record, do we?  Let's all try to stay healthy, people!!

We did have an hour to work on our gifts today.  They will be cute once they are done.

7 people have their "All of the other reindeer" stories done and they are cute!!  I put two in the showca...

What a Day!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Friday, December 10, 2010,
Wow, we had quite a day.  First, we got to meet the kindergarteners and they were so cute!  Fun!  Even more fun though is to see how cute the 4th grade students are when they are helping the Kindergarteners.  What great, gentle helpers they can be.  What an awesome experience for all of us!!  Then, there was the school dance celebration.  It was even way more awesome and fantastic and fun then I could have imagined it would be.  Every kid in the room had on a  big smile. (Even the ones who wo...

Afternoon Meeting

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, December 9, 2010,
As you know I was gone this afternoon.  Today's BHTQ has to do with that.  How was the class in general?  How were you specifically?  Blog a sentence that lets me know your answer to those two questions and I will give you 4 tickets.  NOTE:  today your blog needs to be a complete sentence in order to get all four tickets.

How are the other reindeer stories coming?  I can't wait to get some done and add them to the display case in the hall.

Don't forget we have Kindergarten buddies tomorrow morn...

All of the Other Reindeer

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, December 8, 2010,
Today we talked in writing workshop about how to write an interesting story--add a conflict, resolve it, use conversation--have someone say it rather than tell it.  We read "Olive, the Other Reindeer" and talked about how Olive used his special talents and skills to save the day for Santa just like Rudolph did even though their skills are very different.  Cool to think about as we prepare to write our stories.  Today we wrote a pre-writing story summary and glued it into our way cool reindeer...

Report Cards Went Home

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, December 7, 2010,
Most of you should be really happy with your report cards.  You are a responsible, hard working group overall and get your stuff in and that really shows on those report cards.  Those of you who do not fit into that catagory know who you are and really need to reflect on what you can do to change the results you got before a second report card goes home.

Today's BHTQ has to do with your report card.  Without telling specifics about your grades, just blog a comment about how you felt seeing the...

Report Cards are DONE!!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Tuesday, December 7, 2010,
I was at school until 6:30 printing your report cards.  They are done now and in envelopes waiting for you to take them home.  That happens tomorrow.

After the report cards I ran off to Jake's band concert and then to dinner at 8:00.  I am quickly writing to you on my way to the club to workout.  I usually swim for 45 minutes--I can do a mile in that amount of time.  I was on the swimming team in college and raced until I was 22.  I was the captain of the team!  But swimming takes too long so ...

The BHTQ

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Sunday, December 5, 2010,
Thanks to Nate who reminded me to put a BHTQ on the blog.  How could I forget that?

Here it is:  Who is your favorite reindeer and why.  You may have 4 tickets if you blog a 3+ sentence comment telling which one of "All of the OTHER" reindeer (in otherwords, NOT RUDOLPH) is your favorite and tell why you like that one the best.

Jake has a hockey tournament in Grantsburg, Wisconsin and that is where I spent the day today.  We just got home.  We have to go back tomorrow for an 8 am game.  YUCK!! ...

Two Big Shows

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Friday, December 3, 2010,
We watched two big puppet shows today so we have 4 left to watch on Monday.  OJ's group may need to go again since they went today with a substitute Rudolph.  This had to be done because another cast members mom took off work to come watch the show so...the show had to go on!

Our reindeer books are really cute as are our puppets.  What fun we have been having focusing on Rudolph.  As you no doubt read in the peek, next week we are going to focus on "All of the Other Reindeer".  That should be ...

Mentors Rock!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Thursday, December 2, 2010,
Some of our 5th grade mentors came in to help out with math today.  They ran some centers and helped us work on some skills.  They are great fun to work with.  I just know you guys will be that great when you are in 5th grade next year.

Our puppet shows are coming along nicely.  All but 2 groups have their scripts done and copied and ready to go.  I will bring the glue gun tomorrow to fix the eyes that keep popping off--yikes, eyeless reindeer just aren't that cute.  The set is coolio and I ...

The Reindeer are Running Wild!

Posted by Jamie Kovacs on Wednesday, December 1, 2010,

It was a fun but rather exhausing day.  The reindeer are wild and need to be tamed.  Perhaps tomorrow will be calmer.  Today we created our puppets, built our set, shopped at the book fair and finalized our scripts.  Wow.  What a day!!  We even squeezed in time to meet with our 5th grade mentors.  The boys held a forum on the importance of reading (the 5th grade boys seemed to think it was hugely important and had great strategies for making it fun and interesting) and the girls worked on mat...
